Ealing Independent College is keen to address a very serious, and current issue – millions of people are living without water, toilets and hygiene. According to a recent report, 844 million people don’t have clean water close to home. (WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) Report 2017), and a staggering 31 percent of schools don’t have clean water. (JMP (2018) Drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in schools; Global baseline report). An unbelievable 2,200 children die every day due to dirty water.
With these stark facts in mind, Adrian Winiecki, Head of Engineering at Ealing Independent College is challenging students, from both within the College and from other local schools to design and build a device that could purify dirty water. We are very excited to see how students will apply their knowledge, creativity and problem solving skills to help address this current, real world issue.
