What to do if I fail my A-Levels

What to do if I fail my A-Levels 2023

Failed A-levels?

It's not the end of the world

So your grades are not what you were hoping for? Failure at your A-Levels can leave you wondering what to do next. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed and discouraged. The good news is that there are ways to overcome this setback and move forward.

Have you set your sights on a particular career path? If getting a specific university degree is your goal, retaking your exams and getting the grades you need is definitely in your interest.

If you fail your A-Levels in 2023, there are several options available to you.

Firstly, you can retake your A-Level exams. Many schools and colleges offer resit opportunities for students who did not achieve the desired grades. Click here to resit your exams as an external candidate at our centre.

At Ealing Independent College we offer intensive A-Level courses. This option is great if you feel as though you need to revisit the curriculum in a supportive environment prior to resitting the exams. The qualification you gain from Ealing Independent College is the same as you would gain from schools. We partner with prestigious awarding bodies.

Evaluating your options

A retake of your A-Levels doesn't mean you've failed, but rather that you're improving and progressing towards your goals. If you choose to retake your A-Levels, it's important to note that your new grades will replace your previous ones. These will be the grades that universities and employers will accept. Inevitably, you'll improve the second time around and if given tailored and targeted support, grade enhancements can become life-changing.

If you're not sure what course to pursue, but are sure you want to go to university immediately, you can apply for a course through clearing.

Bear in mind, you should not rush into accepting a place on any course if you apply through clearing. You may risk becoming unhappy or being stuck on a course that's not right for you, which may lead to you dropping out.

Taking the time to retake might be worth it, so that when you reapply, you can choose courses that are actually of interest to you.

Will universities know your grades are achieved by resitting?

Depending on the situation behind your retake, universities may ask you why you weren't able to earn the required grades on your first attempt.

Retaking your A-Levels has a lot of benefits and should be mentioned when applying to universities as something that has helped you grow as a person. Your personal statement is your opportunity to show why you would make a great student.
